Rio de Janeiro is the second most populous city in Brazil and the sixth most populous city in the Americas. Rio de Janeiro is the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Part of the city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2012 as a cultural landscape.

Founded in 1565 by the Portuguese, the city was originally the seat of the Capitania do Rio de Janeiro, a domain of the Portuguese Empire. Rio de Janeiro is one of the most visited cities in the world and is known for its natural landscapes, carnival, samba, bossa nova and beach resorts such as Barra da Tijuca, Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon. Besides the beaches, the most famous sites are the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer on top of Corcovado Mountain, designated as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Sugar loaf and its cable car, the Sambadrome (Sambódromo), a permanent parade route used during Carnival, and the Maracanã Stadium.

Gondelfahrt zum Zuckerhut

Der Zuckerhut oder auch Pão de Açúcar (portugiesisch) ist ein Berg in Rio de Janeiro. Er liegt an der Mündung der Guanabara-Bucht, auf einer Halbinsel, welche in den Atlantik hineinragt. Er erhebt sich 396 Meter über den Hafen und ist unverwechselbar. Seinen Namen verdankt er seiner Ähnlichkeit mit der traditionellen Form des konzentrierten raffinierten Zuckerhuts. Der Zuckerhut ist weltweit für seine Seilbahn und den Panoramablick auf die Stadt und die Umgebung bekannt.

Der Berg zählt zu einem der vielen monolithischen Berge aus Granit und Quarz, die sich direkt aus dem Wasser rund um Rio de Janeiro erheben, und ist neben dem Corcovado eines der Wahrzeichen von Rio und Brasilien. Dieser ist durch das 2006 geschaffene Naturdenkmal und Urca Hill geschützt. Es ist Teil eines Weltkulturerbes, das 2012 von der UNESCO erklärt wurde.

Ipanema

Neben der Copacabana ist Ipanema der wichtigste Strand in Rio de Janeiro. Berühmt wurde er durch das Lied „Girl from Ipanema“. Direkt daneben befindet sich eines der gehobeneren Viertel Rios. Die Kombination aus Strand und angenehmer Großstadt ist in dieser Form einzigartig. Die beiden Strände Copacabana und Ipanema werden durch den Felsvorsprung Arpoador und ein militärisch genutztes Fort getrennt. Der Strand von Ipanema ist für seine schönen Häuser und seinen gesellschaftlichen Flair bekannt. Zwei Berge, welche Dois Irmãos oder zu Deutsch Zwei Brüder, genannt werden, erheben sich am westlichen Ende des Strandes. Dieser ist in Abschnitte unterteilt, welche durch Postos (Rettungsschwimmertürme) abgegrenzt sind.
